ARTIST OF THE WEEK "BRIMA WOLOBAH" INTERVIEW WITH EZEKIEL MOSES

The world of art is the world of beauty, a world of creativity a world of possibility.

Hello and welcome to CHANGE ENTERTAINMENT my name is EZEKIEL MOSES your regular host on this blog, today I have an interesting personality here for your delight, am in his Art Gallery live here in Monrovia Liberia he made this lovely painting , he is an artist, a painter with lovely and amazing works of art, he is one of Liberia’s best keeping it real and adding color to life, sir you are welcome. Can you please introduce yourself?

BRIMA WOLOBAH: Thank you so much EZEKIEL MOSES my name is BRIMA WOLOBAH am an artist a Liberian, am I from the Lorma tribe, from Lofa County and I love painting.

EZEKIEL: BRIMA tell us, how did you come about painting?

BRIMA WOLOBAH: I started drawing as a child, I was a refugee in Genie during the Liberian war, all my drawings was always conflict, war images, I will draw people carrying guns killing each other the air of violence was so much, art is a medium of communication so I was able to express my feeling and emotions through drawing and art. I came back to Liberia after the 1997 election, few months later a visited a couple of artist homes, they were so excited when they saw my drawings. I began to work with some artist, my drawing skills improved and I began to practice with water color, 1999, I stopped drawing I didn’t have interest again as a career something that could benefit my future so I left it, ten years later 2007 my daughter was born things got worse there was no means of survival, a dropped from college after three years, the only skill I had was drawing so I went back to drawing but this time with more energy, courage and passion a reason I named my daughter Courage, because her birth gave me the Courage to start again. I went to Child Art Liberia as an apprentice, I was learning how to paint and teaching children how to draw, three years later I was good enough and bold enough to go out on my own.

EZEKIEL: Wow! That was so inspirational…I mean your experiences, the war and how you were able to start again. Please tell us at CHANGE ENTERTAINMENT some of your experiences as a child at the refugee camp?

BRIMA WOLABAH:  At the refugee camp things were not normal like before…

EZEKIEL: What do you mean?

BRIMA WOLOBAH: I mean the language barrier, different school which was way below the standard of where I was coming from, the food was different, we eat bugger wheat a local diet brought for refugees, for you to have food after every two months UNHCR will bring food you and your family will wait in the sun for hours you will be given food according to the number of family members that you have.

EZEKIEL: So how has this experience sharpen you as a person?

BRIMA WOLOBAH: Sometimes I reflect on refugee life and I see the danger and disaster that war does, some times when you are not focus you will be negatively affected and begin to do what you are not suppose to do, I think I is one of the reason I started drawing at my ideal time I draw that was the only way I found joy everywhere was used for me as a drawing pad, right now I hate violence with a passion.

EZEKIEL: You heard it yourself people, please WW Tell us about some of your achievements so far?

BRIMA WOLOBAH: So far my art works have been on exhibition at the American Embassy here in Liberia, at the Executive Pavilion which is our Presidential Villa here in Liberia, you would see my work depicting the signing of the declaration of independence, I have been commission be so many people, white, blacks Lebanese and many more to do painting for them. Currently am an instructor at the Cachelle International Creative Arts Center, here in Monrovia, if you come to the Art Gallery you would see my works and I hope you will like them for that I have no doubt.

EZEKIEL: This is so much achievement I tell you, especially from a man that almost gave up the same art that has brought him to lime light. Please tell us what are the basic skills one will need to be a professional artist like you and would you advise your child to be an artist?

BRIMA WOLOBAH: Not really, first to be an artist you have to be very patient, you have to be very observant, creative, you must be able to think out of the box, you must be able to listen to your inner thought and have the ability to concentrate effectively.

EZEKIEL: You heard from the master himself, you can be anything you want but to be a great artist you must possess these qualities. Let me ask you as an artist what do you see ahead, what do you think the future holds for you art in Liberia and Africa

BRIMA WOLOBAH: I believe the future is bright, art has brought me this far and holds many things for me, art lives forever and with my persistence in building new ideas in art I will definitely make a name and my name will live on. For art in Liberia, it really may not be easy because the average Liberian have no value for art, they really don’t see value in art, they may admire it and praise it but they really don’t see value in it, and that alone is an hindrance, if they don‘t patronize art except for the educated ones, but I believe as education of art increases people will begin to value art more and artist will begin to see the fruit of their labour.

EZEKIEL: You heard it yourself, for art to grow in Africa we must begin to value Art. Please tell us your last word for all your fans in Liberia, Africa and all around the word your encouragement for all Art lovers and Artist all around the world?

BRIMA WOLOBAH: My last word is very simple, let us try to be creative, in our thinking in our acts in all we do, it is only then that people will find please in art. To all artist my friends and loved ones the sky is the limit do whatever you do with the love for are and value your creativity.
